I am saddened to see what happened to Nimra Amjad who is running for School Trustee in the Ward that I represent, and like Nimra working hard to earn the trust of residents in October.
I came to Calgary speaking no English, and after hard work with community support I was able to become a Calgary Police Officer where I served for 21 years before becoming a Councillor. Public service is hard work, but rewarding when you see the difference you can make in someone’s life. It was in this decades of service I have seen the very worst, but also the very best of people. I condemn these kind of statements, and their desire to create fear and division will not work.
I came to Canada for the reasons that we all love calling Canada home, our freedom to worship, speech, assembly, to seek public office, and freedom from the hate and division that we to often see in other parts of the World. I encourage all candidates to not be discouraged by one persons hate, and keep running for pubic office in all levels of Government so that they can show everyone, what courage and dedication looks like.
