At its Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024 Regular Meeting, Council voted to require candidates for mayor and councillor in the 2025 General Election to provide a criminal record check, known as a Police Information Check (PIC), from the Calgary Police Service when submitting their nomination papers.  This new requirement is set out in Elections Bylaw 50M2024, in accordance with Section 21.1 of the Local Authorities Election Act.

Candidates for mayor and councillor are responsible for paying the cost of the PIC which must be dated no earlier than six months before the date of the candidate’s nomination submission. The PIC is one of several nomination requirements. More information about nomination requirements is available at electionscalgary.ca.

The requirement for a criminal record check for school board trustee candidates in the 2025 General Election is a decision of the Calgary Board of Education and Calgary Catholic School District, respectively. Candidate nominations for the 2025 General Election open Thursday, Jan. 2, 2025 and close at noon, Monday, Sept. 22, 2025. Election Day is Monday, Oct. 20, 2025. Visit electionscalgary.ca for more information.

Sean Chu arrived in Calgary from Taiwan in 1985 speaking not a word of English, and within 7 years he was a sworn officer with the Calgary Police Service. From that point on Sean worked with the Calgary Police Service as on Officer for 21 years in a number of roles until 2013.
