This milestone was achieved through Council’s investment in the Public Transit Safety Strategy, as part of The City’s commitment to ensuring safe and secure transit for all residents.
“In total, Transit Public Safety has added more than 70 new officers to its team, achieving our target goal of 185 operational transit peace officers by the end of 2024,” says Transit Public Safety Deputy Chief Dan Yontz. “At the beginning of this year we went live with our district model, and now that our hiring program is complete, we are able to fully transition from 12 transit peace officers a shift to having 45 officers deployed across the transit system at any given time.”
The City of Calgary’s newest transit peace officers bring a wealth of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and skills to their roles. Driven by a shared commitment to serving their community, these individuals are united by their passion for making a positive impact and ensuring public safety. From compassionate community advocates to individuals with a strong sense of responsibility, the new graduates are prepared and ready to begin their journey as key contributors to Calgary’s enhanced transit safety efforts.
“I’m excited for the new challenges ahead,” said Dannie Nguyen, class leader for the graduating transit peace officers.
Dannie, who was born in Hamilton, Ontario and grew up in Vancouver, B.C., attended the Justice Institute of British Columbia, where he received a Law Enforcement Studies diploma. He then started an 11-year career in Corrections before joining The City of Calgary’s training program to become a transit peace officer.
“I look forward to meeting my new colleagues and hope to further inspire positive change as a transit peace officer,” Dannie added.
