The weather is beginning to turn and so is work on the 4th Avenue flyover. Construction crews have nearly completed the planned work on the left side of the bridge and will be turning their attention to the right side later this month. Construction work will continue through the winter to keep the bridge on track for an expected full reopening in fall of 2025.

The flyover has been reduced to a single lane since spring of 2024 in order to complete necessary upgrades to the bridge, improving the overall condition and extending its service life by an additional 35 years.

“We’re making great progress on the bridge restoration and are working through the winter to get the bridge reopened for commuters as quickly as possible,” says Max Lacroix, Project Manager and Senior Structural Engineer on the project. “We really appreciate Calgarians bearing with us as we complete this important work.”

Details of Full Bridge Closure:

Closure Dates: Nov. 15th at 9 p.m. to Nov. 18th at 5 a.m.

Reason for Closure: Transitioning work from the left side of the bridge to the right

Detour Routes: Traffic will be rerouted to enter downtown via Reconciliation Bridge

Additional Closures:

Following the full bridge closure, lane closures will be required to prioritize public safety while crews install the work platform on the right side of the bridge.

The rolling closures will occur overnight in November and December and are expected to affect Riverfront Avenue, Memorial Drive, and Edmonton Trail. This work is anticipated to be finished before the new year.

Impact:

Though impacts to Calgarians are expected to be minimal, we apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your patience during construction.
