Calgary is buzzing with construction projects, and The City has increased services for Remote Video Inspections (RVI) to provide a convenient tool for homeowners and contractors. From home improvements to commercial developments, RVI offers same day virtual permit inspections, allowing Calgarians to wrap up a project at a time that works for them.

“During such a pivotal time in Calgary’s construction history, Remote Video Inspections has proven to be another effective method to request an inspection,” says Kris Dietrich, Manager of Trade and Subdivision Inspections. “Since expanding our service offerings, we are able to keep up with demand while offering residents a more convenient option to close out their permits.”

Between January and June, RVI experienced a 1,248 per cent year-over-year increase in bookings compared to 2024, averaging 877 appointments per month. In March, The City added homeowner inspection types, which continue to contribute to the growth of the program.

For homeowners, several plumbing and gas, building and development permit inspection types are available to request from the comfort of their home. Additionally, contractors can request a variety of electrical, plumbing and gas, building and development inspection types while on a job site, immediately after verifying the work is ready for inspection.

“The City continues to streamline the process through RVI by increasing accessibility and decreasing turnaround times and expenses,” says Dietrich. The program uses reliable, secure communication to connect residents with a Safety Code Office, ensuring projects are inspected with the same diligence and accuracy as an on-site inspection.

While in-person inspections will continue to be available at full capacity, the inspections completed virtually reduces the number of inspectors travelling to the field, helping to enhance team safety and lower our environmental impact in support of The City’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.
