The City of Calgary is partnering with the local disability community to host “AccessAbiliTea,” a free National AccessAbility Week event celebrating the contributions of Calgarians with disabilities. AccessAbiliTea will take place at the Municipal Complex Plaza from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and is open to everyone. The venue is wheelchair accessible and both American Sign Language interpretation and Closed Captions will be provided. The event will also feature the first ever Disability Pride Flag raising in Calgary.
The AccessAbiliTea event marks the official start of a period of engagement between the disability community and The City of Calgary, which is part of a program of work to further remove barriers that people with disabilities face in participating fully in civic life and accessing City services. The City wants to listen and learn from people living with disabilities and the people who support them; and invites them to connect with its engagement team at the event. National AccessAbility Week is held annually across Canada, beginning the last Sunday in May, and is a platform to highlight the importance of accessibility and inclusion, as well as recognize the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, and acknowledge the ongoing work needed to remove barriers in our communities, workplaces, and public spaces.
