Snow has arrived in Calgary and the annual Snow Angels campaign is back in action, encouraging residents to support each other by shoveling a neighbour’s sidewalk.
Becoming a Snow Angel is simple: just adopt a sidewalk and keep it clear whenever it snows. Calgarians are encouraged to look out for neighbours who might need help with snow removal and lend a hand.
Snow Angels are especially valuable to older adults, individuals with limited mobility and anyone else who might need temporary assistance keeping sidewalks clear of snow.
“Being a Snow Angel is about more than just shoveling snow; it’s about building a stronger, more connected community,” says Maerge Gebreegzabher, Team Lead Senior Services Home Maintenance at The City of Calgary. “When we help our neighbours, we create a ripple effect of kindness and support that benefits everyone. We’re encouraging Calgarians to come together this winter and make a difference, one shovel at a time.”
Each year, The City of Calgary helps Calgarians recognize Snow Angels with a printed certificate. These certificates can be downloaded from calgary.ca/SnowAngels or requested through 311 via the web, mobile app or phone. Snow Angels and those they help are also encouraged to share their stories on social media using the hashtag #yycSnowAngels.
Since the program launched in 2004, thousands of Calgarians have participated as Snow Angels, fostering a spirit of community and mutual support.
