By August 6, 2025No Comments

Calgarians are invited to apply to serve on Council-appointed Boards, Commissions and Committees (BCCs) between Aug. 5 and Sept. 4, 2025.

BCCs play a vital role in shaping Calgary’s future by providing advice and guidance to Council, making recommendations, and hearing appeals on some City matters. Serving on a BCC is a meaningful way to strengthen your community and contribute to local decision-making.

Eligibility and Process

All applicants must:
• be at least 18 years old;
• be a resident of Calgary, or an Indigenous person residing within the Treaty 7 region; and
• meet the specific eligibility criteria outlined for each BCC in bylaws or legislation.

The appointment process includes:
1. Completion of an application form and submission to the City Clerk’s Office;
2. Application review by the BCC Chair and members based on skills and qualifications;
3. Calgary Police Commission appointments will be made by City Council at their Organizational Meeting on Nov. 3, 2025;
4. Nominations Committee consideration and recommendations for all other Boards, Commissions and Committees appointments will be on Nov. 20, 2025; and
5. Final appointments to Boards, Commissions and Committees will be made by City Council at the Regular Meeting of Council on Boards, Commissions and Committees on Dec. 4, 2025.

Inclusion of Treaty 7 Indigenous Applicants

Indigenous persons who reside outside Calgary but within the Treaty 7 region are eligible and encouraged to apply for vacant BCC positions. This includes members of the:
• Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksika, Piikani, Amskaapipiikani, Kainai)
• Îethka Nakoda Wîcastabi First Nations (Chiniki, Bearspaw, Goodstoney)
• Tsuut’ina First Nation
• Métis citizens, including those from Otipemisiwak Métis Government in Districts 1–6

Remuneration and Expense Policy

Beginning Jan. 1, 2026, a new Council policy, CP2024-09 Remuneration and Expenses for Public Members Serving on Council-Established Boards, Commissions and Committees, will provide stipends and reimbursement of reasonable expenses for Public Members participating in official BCC meetings. The Remuneration and Expenses for Public Members Serving on Council-Established Boards policy is designed to reduce barriers and encourage broader, more inclusive participation.
