Budget 2025

By May 28, 2025No Comments

Every day, your property taxes help run the essential services and infrastructure that make Calgary a great place to live. With 63 cents of every property tax dollar staying right here, we’re able to invest in the things that matter most to Calgarians like public safety, transit, infrastructure, housing, and more.

“Calgarian’s receive great value for their tax dollars,” says David Duckworth, Chief Administrative Officer. “Property tax supports service like 24/7 police, fire and emergency response, and 40,000 registered and drop-in recreation opportunities.”

Building a Great Place to Live
From where you live to how you get around, your tax dollars are helping shape a more livable city.

Since the start of 2025, close to 8,000 new homes have been added to Calgary’s housing supply, giving families, newcomers, and long-time residents more choice than ever before. This growth supports a city that’s evolving to meet the needs of a rising population and changing housing preferences.

New additions to Calgary’s housing stock include:

  • 3,700 high-rise apartments
  • 760 rowhouses and townhomes
  • 480 semi-detached homes
  • 1,700 secondary suites
  • 1,300 single detached homes

These investments are part of The City’s broader efforts to expand housing options, increase supply, and improve affordability—creating vibrant, inclusive communities across Calgary.

Wherever you’re headed, we’re making it easier to get there
Whether you’re heading to work, dropping your kids off at school, or meeting friends across the city, getting around Calgary should be safe and reliable. That’s why The City is continuing to invest in transportation infrastructure and programs that make every day travel easier for all Calgarians.

“We know that the way people move around Calgary impacts their quality of life,” says CAO Duckworth. “These investments are about more than just infrastructure, they support public safety, housing, and transit, which has helped make Calgary one of the most livable cities in North America and the world.

This year’s key investments include:

  • $30 million to improve pavement quality across the city
  • $26 million for upgrades to existing roadways
  • $19 million to support the Calgary Transit Low Income  Monthly Pass program

Together, these improvements are helping to maintain essential infrastructure, expand access to transit, and keep Calgary moving as our population grows.

When it’s time to unwind—you’ve got options

In addition to a vibrant local economy with restaurants, pubs, and entertainment options, Calgary offers access to more than 200 City-owned recreation facilities and over 50 operated sites, plus more than 9,000 hectares of parks and open spaces across the city. From splash parks and recreation centres to arenas and arts spaces, these are the places where Calgarians connect, stay active, and build community. And it’s all made possible through continued public investment.

Investing in a Safer Calgary

Whether you’re walking through your neighbourhood, commuting downtown, or enjoying a local event, feeling safe is essential, and it’s something Calgarians consistently say matters most. That’s why The City is continuing to invest in initiatives that strengthen public safety, enhance emergency response, and support community well-being.

Recent public safety investments include:

  • $31 million to increase Calgary Police Service
  • $6 million to improve downtown safety initiatives
  • $4 million to improve emergency response capacity

These initiatives are part of a broader commitment to build a resilient city where people feel secure in their homes, communities, and shared public spaces.
