Calgary Transit held a special dedication ceremony today at Canyon Meadows Golf Course to recognize the legacy of Sarah and William Jones, whose generous $100,000 estate gift helped fund a Calgary Transit Access (CTA) shuttle that has been serving Calgarians with disabilities.

The donation, made at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, nearly covered the cost of a new shuttle and helped expand CTA’s specialized fleet to 85 vehicles. Due to global supply chain and manufacturing delays, the delivery of the new shuttle was postponed—but the impact of Sarah and William’s gift has since been felt widely. The shuttle has been actively supporting Calgary Transit Access service since August 2024, helping improve mobility and quality of life for Calgarians with disabilities.

“This shuttle is more than just a vehicle—it’s a symbol of Sarah and William’s care for others and their belief in supporting independence and mobility for everyone,” says Mark van der Leest, Manager of Service Delivery at Calgary Transit. “Their gift will have a lasting impact, and we’re honoured to recognize their contribution today.”

Speaking on behalf of the family, Gail Evans, the niece of Sarah Jones, shared heartfelt reflections about their legacy. “Sarah and Bill believed deeply in giving back to the community as Sarah worked a long career in healthcare,” she said. “It means so much to our family to see their gift in action—helping people get where they need to go every day.”

Calgary Transit Access (CTA) is a shared-ride public transportation service designed for Calgarians with disabilities that prevent them from using regular Calgary Transit buses and CTrains. CTA provides a convenient, book-in-advance, door-to-door service to ensure everyone can travel comfortably and safely.
