The City of Calgary reported today that the unintentional wastewater leak into the Bow River remains contained. Alberta Health Services has confirmed that it has no current plans to issue health advisories related to this incident.

Alberta Health Services says, based on available data to date, the risk to the public as a result of this event is extremely low. The City is conducting water quality tests at the site of the leak every four hours and teams are preparing to clear any remaining wastewater from the damaged pipe.

“We have seen dramatic improvements in the volume of wastewater flowing into the Bonnybrook Wastewater Treatment Plant. Levels have returned to normal,” says Doug Morgan, General Manager of Operational Services.

“This is all thanks to our Water Services team who were able to stop the leak within a few hours after the source of it was identified. We have remained on site through the weekend to ensure the leak stays contained, conduct further tests and prepare for our investigation into the cause of the leak.”

Details on our findings about the root cause of the leak and future repair plans will be shared when they are available.   We will continue to work with Alberta Health Services and Environment and Protected Areas (EPA) to monitor the situation, including sampling and testing of the drinking water to ensure it remains safe for consumption.
