Calgary Transit
On Monday, Sept. 30 we will be operating buses, CTrains and On Demand on a Saturday level of service, in observance of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Visit calgarytransit.com for more details and to plan your trip.

Starting Saturday, Sept. 28 until the very early hours of Tuesday, Oct. 1, the Blue Line will be closed between Saddletowne and Rundle stations. Shuttle buses will provide service between these stations. CTrains in the northeast will be fully back up and running by start of service on Tuesday, Oct. 1.

Parking
Enjoy free parking in on-street ParkPlus zones on Monday, Sept. 30. Weekend rates apply at all Calgary Parking parkades and surface lots. Please note that regular rates will be in effect at partner lots such as TELUS Spark, Calgary Stampede, Calgary Zoo and Heritage Park.

The Calgary Parking Contact Centre and Impound Lot will be closed on Monday, Sept. 30. For more information, please visit Calgary Parking.

Road construction and traffic safety
The following road closures will be in effect over the weekend:

17 Avenue S.W. between 2 and 8 Street S.W. crews will be milling and paving and the following closures will be in place:

  • Sept. 28, 5 a.m. to 4 p.m. various closures between 2 & 8 Street S.W. while crews are milling the road.
  • Sept. 29, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. 17 Avenue S.W. closed between 2 & 5 Street S.W. (4 Street S.W. intersection closed).
  • Sept. 30, 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. 17 Avenue S.W. closed between 5 Street S.W. and College Lane.
  • Oct. 1, 5 a.m. to 3 p.m. 17 Avenue S.W. closed between College Lane and 8 Street S.W.

36 Street N.E. and 32 Avenue N.E.

  • Sept. 27, 8 a.m. to Oct. 1, 4 a.m.: Calgary Transit is doing track maintenance so east and westbound traffic is closed at the intersection of 36 Street N.E. and 32 Avenue N.E.

Sarcee Trail at Bow Trail to Richmond Road S.W.

  • Sept. 25 to 27, 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. nightly: Southbound Sarcee Trail closed with traffic detoured to Strathcona Boulevard / 69 Street S.W. Calgary Police Service will be on site to control traffic at the intersection of Sarcee Trail.

Sunnyside Flood Barrier  (ongoing): eastbound Memorial Drive N.W. closed between 9 Street N.W. and Centre Street with two-way traffic on the north side westbound lanes.

4 Avenue Flyover (ongoing): reduced to a single lane.

Things to do

Orange Shirt Day Ceremony

Join us to commemorate Indian residential school victims, honour survivors and their families, and commit to acting on reconciliation.

Monday, Sept. 30, 9 to 10:30 a.m. at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland, 750 9 Ave. S.E.

Enjoy presentations from various speakers, including the Mayor, Indigenous Elders and students from school boards across the city at The Confluence Historic Site & Parkland (previously Fort Calgary). A blessing from an Elder will start the event and Indigenous dancers will entertain during the event.

Everyone is strongly encouraged to wear orange as a sign of support and to honour the children who didn’t return from residential schools across the country.

The following buildings and structures will be illuminated orange in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation:

  • Olympic Plaza
  • TELUS Spark Science Centre
  • Reconciliation Bridge
  • Calgary Tower

Additionally, flags on City of Calgary buildings will be lowered to half-mast.

The following will be open on Monday, Sept. 30:

  • Public skating will be offered Monday, Sept. 30 from 1 to 2:15 p.m. at:
  • Glenmore Reservoir during its regular hours for recreational use.
  • Driving ranges and golf courses; book your tee time at calgary.ca/golf.

The following will be closed on Monday, Sept. 30:

Swimming lessons are running on Sept. 28/29 but not on Sept. 30. Double check your program schedule at liveandplay.calgary.ca

Sean Chu

Sean Chu arrived in Calgary from Taiwan in 1985 speaking not a word of English, and within 7 years he was a sworn officer with the Calgary Police Service. From that point on Sean worked with the Calgary Police Service as on Officer for 21 years in a number of roles until 2013.
