Connect: Calgary’s Parks Plan

By June 2, 2025No Comments

Calgarians can look forward to a new plan which helps direct how we will build and improve parks that better reflect the diverse recreational needs of a growing city, thanks to a new Council approved plan, “Connect: Calgary’s Parks Plan”. This long-term plan is set to redefine how Calgary’s parks are developed, enhanced, and maintained for generations to come.

It’s been two decades since Calgary’s last major parks plan — and in that time, the city has grown, evolved, and changed. The new plan, shaped by public engagement, provides direction and guidance that continues to support Calgarians connecting with the environment, wellness, culture and each other.

“Parks are more than green spaces — they are essential to the health, identity and vitality of our city,” says Keath Parker, manager in Parks and Open Spaces. “With Connect, we’re ensuring our parks system is ready for future growth and that every Calgarian has nearby access to well-designed, welcoming and safe park spaces.”

What’s in the Plan?

The Connect plan is built on four key pillars that reflect public feedback:

  • Inclusivity and Community: Designing parks for everyone regardless of age, ability, or background while encouraging community involvement through volunteer programs and partnerships.
  • Growth and Connectivity: Increasing park sizes in new communities and enriching amenities in existing communities, making it easier for residents to access and enjoy outdoor spaces.
  • Sustainable Management: Identifying and targeting the right care in the right spaces to ensure consistent quality and maintenance of the park system citywide.
  • Environmental Protection: Safeguarding Calgary’s ecological network, other natural areas and expanding the urban tree canopy.

What’s Next?

Connect lays the groundwork for future implementation to bring the plan’s vision to life in partnership with the development industry and community groups. To learn, more visit Calgary.ca/parksplan. With Connect, Calgary is not just planning parks — it’s planning a legacy.
