By November 7, 2024No Comments

The City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service (CPS), in collaboration with community partners, are announcing the creation of a new downtown police front counter location, and the movement and expansion of the Downtown Safety Hub.

As of Monday, Nov. 4, 2024, the front counter at CPS District 1 Ramsay location will be closed, and operations will resume at the new downtown location on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2024The Stephen Avenue Safety Hub has also moved to this location to continue providing a centralized location for uniformed officers at the new CPS Community Counter & Downtown Safety Hub, located at the Telephone Building – 119 6 Ave SW.

“Calgary is one of the only major cities without a police station in its downtown core, a gap which was reiterated by the members of the Downtown Safety Leadership Table that I pulled together last year,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek. “Today, we are putting this priority into action with the new CPS Community Counter & Downtown Safety Hub. This centralized location ensures that Calgarians have visible safety services in our downtown.”

The new CPS Downtown Community Counter will be publicly accessible Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. At this location, the public can report non-emergency police matters, including non-injury collisions and lost/found property, or speak with a police officer for general information and guidance about crime and safety issues.

“We have heard the calls from our community to have a more established, visible policing presence within downtown and the CPS Community Counter & Downtown Safety Hub is a collaborative solution to address the needs of our public within our current budget capacity,” says Calgary Police Service Deputy Chief Raj Gill. “We wish to thank our partners at The City of Calgary who have worked tirelessly to find and establish this new location. Partnership is key to our collective success and the overall safety of Calgarians.”

Since September 2021, The City of Calgary and the Calgary Police Service have operated a centralized safety hub location on Stephen Avenue where uniformed officers in the downtown core can collaborate on common issues, complete necessary paperwork, and store equipment. The opening of the CPS Community Counter & Downtown Safety Hub provides opportunities for greater collaboration among uniformed services.

“A centralized location in the downtown core allows partner agencies to maximize connections by leveraging each other’s expertise to provide the best service possible to the public and businesses,” says Community Standards Chief Ryan Pleckaitis.

Outside the hours of operation for the CPS Downtown Community Counter, the public can connect with your local police by contacting the District 1 office at 403-428-6100, the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234, or filing an online report at calgarypolice.ca. Call 9-1-1 for all emergencies.
