The City of Calgary has finalized a land agreement with Triovest for the future site of the Northeast Athletic Complex, marking a key milestone in bringing this project to life. Located at the northwest corner of 80 Avenue N.E. and Metis Trail N.E. in the community of Saddle Ridge, closing this agreement brings us one step closer to creating a vibrant hub for sports, recreation and community connection.
In alignment with GamePLAN Making Waves’ aim of increasing bookable hours at indoor fields and athletic parks by 2.5 times, the Northeast Athletic Complex will help meet the rising demand for accessible, multi-use recreational spaces in northeast Calgary.
“Investments like the Northeast Athletic Complex are how we build a stronger Calgary. By creating high-quality spaces, we enable athletes and community groups to come together, stay active, and thrive. With more families choosing to call this area home, the complex will deliver the space and amenities our growing communities deserve,” says Mayor Jyoti Gondek.
“The Northeast Athletic Complex is a meaningful investment in northeast Calgary, bringing much-needed recreational infrastructure to support residents of all ages,” says Ward 5 Councillor Raj Dhaliwal. “This project is an important step toward making it easier for everyone to stay active and connect as a community.”
Designed for year-round use, the athletic complex will offer a fieldhouse and an athletic park with outdoor fields and amenities to support practice, play, training and competition for Calgarians of all ages and skill levels.
“The new athletic complex reflects The City’s commitment to investing in the long-term growth and vibrancy of northeast Calgary,” says Michael Thompson, General Manager of Infrastructure Services “Securing the land ensures we can deliver high-quality multi-use space that will benefit all Calgarians in the area.”
“This step marks a major milestone in bringing this important project to life,” says Sarah Huber, Director of Project Development. “As we move this project forward, we’re focused on delivering a complex that will foster sports, recreation and connection for residents in northeast Calgary.”
The athletic complex is expected to include:
· A natural turf cricket field to host local, regional and national events — a first-of-its-kind for Calgary.
· Four competition-sized multi-use artificial turf fields to accommodate a wide range of field sports.
· An indoor fieldhouse for year-round training and competition.
· Supporting amenities including scenic pathways and green spaces, covered spectator areas, parking and a playground.
As a premier event-hosting venue, the Northeast Athletic Complex will elevate Calgary’s profile as a top-tier destination for major sporting tournaments and events. Beyond sports, the athletic complex will be a vibrant community hub — a welcoming space where friends, families and visitors can come together, stay active and connect.
Public engagement was conducted in 2024 to ensure the design and amenities of the Northeast Athletic Complex will meet community needs and enhance recreational opportunities. With the land agreement secured, we are advancing with the design and permitting work.
“GamePLAN Making Waves aims to have a total of 89 artificial turf fields and 13 fieldhouses by 2050,” says Heather Johnson, Director of Recreation & Social Programs. “This new athletic complex in northeast Calgary in the next step in ensuring that everyone in Calgary can access facilities, amenities and programs that support and encourage active living, health, well-being and community.”
