ONWARD Opens Community Affordable Housing for Women and Children

By February 3, 2025No Comments

Onward is pleased to announce the grand opening of our most recent affordable housing development located in an established community in Calgary that will house women and children.

This contemporary development will provide 29 homes for women and children who need safe and affordable housing. Located in a desirable established community, residents will benefit from easy access to transit, schools, shopping, amenities, and quality of life.

This latest development is an example of collaboration from three orders of government to deliver much-needed community affordable housing to deserving Calgarians. Project funding was three-fold: up to $8.35 million through The City of Calgary stream of the third round of the Federal Government RHI (Rapid Housing Initiative) administered through CMHC (Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation); The City of Calgary provided funding up to $1.15 million; and up to $3.4 million in funding was provided by the Government of Alberta through the Affordable Housing Partnership Program.

“Through developments like the affordable community housing project in Killarney, we are building a better future for generations to come and helping to establish a stable supply of rental housing for our most vulnerable Canadians,” said George Chahal, Member of Parliament for Calgary Skyview, Alberta. “Supporting these individuals, especially women and children, is a key part of our government’s human rights-based approach to housing. And it’s how we build a housing system that leaves no one behind.”

“Alberta’s government is proud to have invested in this project that will provide stability to many Calgarians over the years,” said Jason Nixon, Minister of Seniors, Community and Social Services. “We will continue to fund projects like these so that more Albertans will have a place to call home that fits their budgets and needs.”

“This affordable housing project in Killarney is a testament to why we need to create these housing opportunities. We’re not only putting a roof over people’s heads, we’re providing safe and welcoming homes where families can put down roots and thrive within an established community,” Mayor Gondek said. “I thank all involved for providing Calgarians with an opportunity for a brighter future.”

Construction started in late 2023 and completed on budget in January 2025. Onward shares pride in this accomplishment with all the contractors, consultants, planners, inspectors, staff and others contributing to this amazing outcome.

Onward will open its doors to first residents in February. Onward is honoured to launch this new chapter in community affordable housing and grateful that, in doing so, it will create meaningful and lasting change in the lives of future residents and their children.
