“These two important projects are an example of The City of Calgary proactively addressing a growing population as these new pump stations are critical to support ongoing residential and commercial development in the area while adding much-needed redundancy to our system,” says Tanner Fellinger, Manager of Process Infrastructure Delivery – Utilities Delivery with The City of Calgary. “These projects demonstrate The City’s commitment to invest in critical upgrades and new construction of our drinking water infrastructure. This will ensure that our city can grow sustainably through effective delivery of clean drinking water for our many residents and businesses.”
The City of Calgary utilizes pump stations to maintain water pressure and fill storage reservoirs throughout the city. These stations are essential for distributing water to homes, businesses and neighboring communities like Airdrie, Chestermere and Strathmore.
The Starlight Pump Station, located in the new south community of Alpine Park, adds capacity by providing an additional 30 million litres per day of drinking water and supports an additional 9,000 homes in the area. As this is the only water source in this rapidly growing area, the new pump station is critical in supporting ongoing residential and commercial development.
The 210 Avenue Pump Station, located in the southwest community of Creekside, adds capacity for an additional 20 million litres of drinking water per day and supports up to 6,000 new homes in the area. It also enhances service reliability by providing redundancy, allowing other pump stations in the region to be taken offline for essential maintenance while continuing to meet increasing water demands.
Construction for the Starlight and 210 Avenue Pump Stations began about two and a half years ago. Commissioning was completed recently, and both are now operational.
