As summer comes to a close, the west end of Downtown Calgary will come alive with a vibrant series of free, outdoor events during a special five-week So Long Summer Series. Offering a variety of free, family-friendly programming, this exciting event series will transform Lot 6 into River Hall, a temporary gathering space for Calgarians to enjoy a blend of all-ages entertainment, dining and relaxation in a welcoming, inclusive and pet-friendly atmosphere.

During the event series, Calgarians can enjoy the local food and beverage options on-site. These vendors will be serving a variety of artisanal coffees, fried chicken, ice cream, local craft beers and refreshing non-alcoholic options. Each weekend will feature all-ages programming with complimentary live music. The site will include picnic tables (picnics are encouraged!), custom play furniture, a small stage and washrooms.

Working with Belleville Placemaking, Îlot 84 and Aire Commune Productions, we are excited to bring this unique event model aimed at increasing vibrancy to the west end of downtown. Based on the success in New York and Montreal, Calgarians will have the opportunity to experience this type of event in the heart of our city.

Thom Mahler, Director of The City’s Downtown Strategy, says: “As part of The City’s overall Downtown Strategy, we continue to look at creating engaging experiences and dynamic public spaces that build community, foster creativity and stimulate economic growth in the heart of our city. We’re excited to create this entertainment hub for Calgarians to gather with their neighbours from all over the city. No matter where you live in Calgary, you’re always home downtown.”

Calgarians, visitors, families, friends and furry companions are all invited to kick-off the event series on Friday, Aug. 30 with a night market and Saturday, Aug. 31 with music by DJ Joash Charles & Friends.
