MARCH 2018 NEWSLETTER REPORT FOR LEAF

During the winter months the LEAF team and the ECA Board have been busy dealing with the transition of the program from the City as contractor to hiring our own contractor(s).  We have provided specifications of the required work to several experienced private contractors and are in the process of receiving quotations for the required work.  These will be assessed in mid-January, and we expect to make decisions and enter into contracts shortly thereafter.

The City will have a role in monitoring work performed, as the City owns the lands.  They will also continue to manage the collection and distribution of the LEAF tax levy money as needed for the ECA to make contractor payments.

An important part of community enhancement/beautification is observing bylaw infractions, such as graffiti, illegal advertising signs on our medians, boulevards and electrical poles.  As interested members of the community, you can do your part to help the LEAF team by calling 311 or going on-line to “311online.calgary.ca” and reporting bylaw infractions to the City.  They will be directed to the correct department to be dealt with. This will help us keep our community looking well cared-for.  The ECA is very concerned with safety issues in our community. A well cared for community is safer and can deter crime.  The LEAF volunteers drive and walk around our community regularly but we may not notice some of these things quickly.  Your help is appreciated!

Year three will see the addition of 30 new planter pots placed throughout our community in the spring. We also plan to construct additional garden beds, however these are noticed to be more challenging than planter pots due to the impact of hares, deer and voles. Plant selections must be well adapted to our eco climate here in Edgemont as well as unattractive to our munching wildlife.

Our community will finally see our replacement Edgemont welcoming entrance sign erected on the NE corner of Edgemont Blvd and John Laurie Blvd, with construction planned for early spring. This will replace the median sign that was hit on Edgemont Blvd a few years ago.  The new sign will not be placed on the median, as there are safety issues to consider. This is also a priority site for a new garden bed and some background trees.
