Water Update

By September 12, 2024No Comments

At Sites 1 to 4 along 33 Avenue N.W. and Shouldice Park, we have completed all 12 pipe repairs. Crews are now in the final stages of backfilling and paving before bringing portions of the road back into service.

At Site 5 on 33 Avenue N.W. and 86 Street N.W., work is still ongoing for the three pipe segments. Excavation is ongoing at one segment, and concrete encasement, curing and form removal activities are underway at the other two segments.

Finally, at Sites 6 to 8 on 16 Avenue N.W., excavation is complete. Concrete pouring and curing are happening at all three sites.

As mentioned yesterday, we’ve confirmed that the concrete encasement repair method is effective for all pipe segments. Our crews have become more efficient as they repeat the steps involved in the process, allowing them to work faster. As a result, we’re currently reviewing the construction timeline and expect to provide an update later this week.

Once the repairs are complete, our Water team will gradually bring the feeder main back into service. This process will take a few days and involves filling, flushing and testing before normal water flow can resume to Calgarians. More updates will be shared about this process as the repairs near completion.

Water use

We want to commend the community for their remarkable efforts in water reduction. Some inspiring examples include community centers using compostable utensils to cut down on dishwashing and hotels switching to self-serve water stations in their restaurants instead of automatically filling glasses and reusing leftover water for plants.

Our commercial customers are also making significant strides. Many have reduced their water use by as much as 30 per cent, with some even adjusting production schedules and deferring maintenance to save water. All these collective efforts have resulted in a drop in water demand.

Yesterday’s water use was 494 million litres, down from 509 million litres the day before, which is a move in the right direction. Thank you to everyone who went the extra mile—or skipped that extra flush—to conserve water. Please continue your efforts to reduce water. Taking small actions inside and not using City water outside add up to make a real difference.

Bylaw and enforcement

While we appreciate everyone who is taking steps to reduce water, we continue to get reports of City water being used outdoors, which is prohibited under Stage 4 Outdoor Water Restrictions. To date, we have received 1,517 complaints involving residential customers, 284 for commercial customers and 130 from multi-family homes. We have issued a total of 29 violation tickets each with a $3,000 fine.

Calgarians who are seeing outdoor water misuse can continue to provide information related to these instances through the “Calgary 3-1-1” app or calgary.ca/311. Our bylaw officers are actively following up and issuing fines when warranted.

With rain in the forecast this week, now is a perfect time to refill your rain barrels or containers. Your support is crucial in helping us complete these repairs, and together, we’re making great progress in securing a reliable water system for Calgary.
