As we move further into fall, Calgarians know that snow could be just around the corner. Thankfully City crews are prepared for the eventual return of winter. Highlighting our commitment to public safety and efficient winter maintenance, we are ready to keep Calgary moving throughout the winter months.
Recently Calgary City Council unanimously approved a new Winter Maintenance Policy. The policy better reflects the work citizens want during the winter months on our roads, sidewalks, pathways and walking and wheeling lanes.
“Winter Maintenance plays a critical role in the everyday lives of Calgarians,” says Chris Hewitt, Manager of Mobility Maintenance at The City of Calgary. “We’re happy to have this work reflected in The City’s new Winter Maintenance Policy.”
Calgarians can be assured that crews and contractors are at the ready 24 hours a day, seven days a week through the entire winter. During snowfall and for 24 hours after snowfall ending, crews will focus on Calgary’s busiest routes and important pedestrian infrastructure and then move onto minor roadways and other infrastructure. This prioritization of work ensuring bus routes and major routes are cleared first, helping keep Calgary moving.
“Snow can happen anytime,” says Hewitt. “The crews are ready to respond, and our priority snow response aims to minimize disruptions caused by weather conditions while maintaining high standards of public safety and convenience.”
Updates to Bylaw regarding shoveling snow from private space to public space
As part of the new Winter Maintenance Policy, City Bylaws have also been updated to include new fines for shovelling snow from private property into public spaces. This includes when snow is shoveled from areas like driveways or private walkways into public space like the road or a bike lane. We encourage Calgarians to use areas like lawns for snow storage over the cooler months, as it will have the added benefit of providing much needed moisture in the spring during the thaw.
We’d also like to remind businesses and property owners of sidewalk responsibility following snowfall. While The City does clear sidewalks next to City-owned property, most sidewalks in Calgary are the responsibility of the adjacent property owner. Adjacent sidewalks should be cleared within 24 hours of snowfall end. Stay safe while shoveling: Ensure you are bundled up and take any necessary breaks should you require them.
Be prepared for cold weather
We encourage all of those living and visiting Calgary to prepare themselves for the colder weather, no matter how they travel. Ensure you are dressed appropriately and plan your route. If you’re driving, consider winterizing your vehicle in advance and leave plenty of time to get to where you need to go. If you’re walking or wheeling, be sure to dress in layers and wear proper footwear to help manage areas where ice could be present.
