Tax bills for over 550,000 residential and non-residential properties are being mailed this week. Property tax is due 30 June 2023. A late payment penalty of seven per cent will be applied to any unpaid portion of property taxes on July 1. The property tax deadline doesn’t apply to the approximate 300,000 property owners who pay their tax monthly through The City’s Tax Instalment Payment Plan (TIPP).

New this year, the January TIPP instalment included The City’s 2023 budget decisions. This created greater stability in TIPP participants monthly payments by spreading the municipal tax increase evenly over the entire year (12 months). Previously, the municipal tax increase was factored into TIPP participants July 1 instalment change. This caused a compounding factor as the municipal tax increase needed to be captured over the last half of the year (six months).

Factoring the municipal tax change into TIPP instalments at the beginning of the year has reduced the amount of change participants will see mid-year, but it has not eliminated them. TIPP participants may still see an increase to their July instalment for a variety reasons, including the need to capture the impact of their property’s assessed value change and the provincial property tax change.

The Property Tax campaign and creates awareness about the June 30 due date, ways to pay, tax assistance programs and the benefits of joining TIPP. Property owner’s will also receive with their bill a comprehensive brochure and tax bill inserts for residential and non-residential property owners.
