2025 Property Tax Increase

By February 29, 2024No Comments

Council voted 8-7 to keep 2025 property tax increase to no more than 3.6% (5.5% for residential and 1.4% for non-residential).

I voted against this. I agree with a Cllr. Sharp that Council voting for a property tax increase of 7.8% and then now turning around and voting to cap it at 3.5% in 2025 and for administration to find efficiencies is disheartening.

The 9 Cllrs. who voted for the tax increase of 7.8% are now voting to cap it and say ‘go find efficiencies’ to administration. When the 6 Cllrs. who made amendments to find efficiencies – were all voted down by the 9. We cannot find efficiencies in 2024 but we can in 2025. Amazing how this only happens in an Election year folks.

Today is February 29th – and that means it is a Leap Year, and like every 4 years – Councillors that vote for tax increases and mock Calgarians for not being able to afford said increases when many are on tight budgets – turn into fiscal conservatives the year before the election, pretending to now care about your wallet.

Like the pumpkin in Cinderella that transforms into a beautiful coach, do not get into this joy ride to City Hall folks – we know what they go back to after they get your vote.
